Registration Fee:     $29 / year

Applicants not located in Europe will be charged an additional $495 for a UK Limited company formation. This provides a legal European presence and will be sufficient to register many .EU domain names.

.EU Refund Policy

If a .EU application is unsuccessful for any reason, the domain name fee of $29 will be credited to the customer's America Registry account, which they may use to apply for another .EU domain name. All .EU sunrise fees and .EU registration fees are non-refundable.

It is the customer's responsibility to ensure they are eligible for a .EU domain name, and can provide any required documentary evidence. Refunds will not be given for applications with incorrect or incomplete information.

Application requirements for .EU Domains

An Applicant for a .EU Domain, whether during the Sunrise period or later, must meet the geographical requirements applicable to all .eu domain name holders as follows:

  1. Companies and organizations having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Community; or
  2. Individuals - natural persons - resident within the European Community.

Applicants that do not meet this requirement may still apply, by registering a UK Limited company in addition to their domain name. This provides a legal European presence and will be sufficient to register your .EU domain name during sunrise phase 2.

Please view the EURid documents below for a complete understanding of the .EU rules and regulations.

Application Procedure

  1. Go to the America Registry website - www.americaregistry.com - and click the .EU banner.
  2. Enter the .EU domain name you wish to apply for and click check domain. Log in to your members account. If you are a new member, you can enter your details and sign up for your free members account.
  3. Enter the registrant's name. The registrant will be the legal owner of your domain name license. It should be either a company name or the name of an individual.
  4. Select your name server configuration. Parking is recommended.
  5. Once your payment has been confirmed, your application will be date stamped and recorded in our system and in your account area. By submitting your application and payment now, you will establish your priority sequence in which we will be submitting applications to the Registry when the appropriate registration period opens.

Sunrise Period

Note: As of 5 April 2006 We are no longer accepting sunrise applications. You are still able to submit After Sunrise applications for the 'land rush' beginning 7 April.

The Sunrise period allows those with specific rights to a given Domain Name to obtain a name that EXACTLY matches their trademark or company name before the Registry opens up for ALL applications.

The Sunrise period consists of two phases each lasting two months. An extra charge will be made for evaluating a Sunrise period application as specified below. This charge reflects the extra handling required to validate the claim of prior right.

Additional Sunrise Fees

Priority Start Date EU Public Bodies EU Trademark Holders EU Other Rights Non-EU Applicants
Sunrise 1 7 Dec 2005 $100 $100 N/A N/A
Sunrise 2 7 Feb 2006 $100 $100 $100 $595
After Sunrise 7 Apr 2006 No extra No extra No extra $495

Sunrise applicants will be required to provide the legal basis that grants the right in community law or the national law of the member state where the right is held, and provide the necessary documentary evidence to demonstrate the right under that law.

Please view the following EURid documents for further information about the sunrise rules and required documentary evidence.

The required documentary evidence will not be required until the actual applications have been submitted to the Registry after the start of the Sunrise period and an initial check by the Validation Agent (PriceWaterhouseCoopers) has shown the applicant has the necessary priority.

Sunrise Phase 1

7 December 2005

Public Bodies
During phase 1, applications can only be made for domain names that correspond with:
  1. The full name of a public body; or
  2. the acronym by which a public body is commonly know; or
  3. if applicable, the territory which is governed by a public body.
A 'Public Body' is the name of that body, for example, the City of Luxembourg, or the acronym under which it is known, for example 'SNCF' (the French Railways). Applicants are only accepted from the public bodies concerned.
Owners of Registered Trademarks
During phase 1, applications can also be made for domain names that EXACTLY correspond with:
  1. Registered EU Member States national trademarks; or
  2. registered EU Community trademarks.
May be applied for by the holder/licensee of the trademark. A 'Registered Trademark' is a National Trademark listed in any European Union country Trademark Register, or a European Community Trademark listed in their Register, in both cases that has completed the official waiting period for any Oppositions to be filed

Sunrise Phase 2

7 February 2006

Other Rights (European Union Company and Individual Names, etc.)
During phase 2, applications can also be made for domain names that EXACTLY correspond with other rights that are protected under the national law of the member state where they are held. Other Prior Rights' are rights that are protected under the national law of the member state where they are held such as:
  1. Company names (having a registered address in the European Union); or
  2. business identifiers (related to organizations with a registered address in the EU); or
  3. distinctive titles of protected literary and artistic work; or
  4. unregistered trademarks (still to be defined); or
  5. trade names (related to organizations with a registered address in the EU)

After Sunrise

7 April 2006

All Other European Applicants
Applications after the sunrise period are for customers who do not qualify for sunrise applications. This includes all European companies and individuals wanting to register domain names that don't exactly match their name or their company's name. All .EU applications are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it is important that you confirm your sunrise and after sunrise applications as soon as possible.

Sunrise Validation Process

The first sunrise applicant for a name will be asked to send acceptable proof of their right to the name within the 40 days provided to the Validation Agent who will assess the documentation provided by that applicant. If the documentation proves the right claimed, the application will be approved and that name will be registered to that applicant. It will become usable only after a 40-day period to allow for any errors or appeals. Any later applicants for the same name will be notified of the decision to award. Note that an application which fails validation will not qualify for any refund.

If the first applicant for a name fails to provide acceptable documentation within the 40 days allocated, the application will be rejected and the Validation Agent will assess the documentation from the applicant who is next in the queue. It is important to note that no matter where your application is located in the queue of requests, you must submit your documentation within the first 40 days of the applicable sunrise period.
